It is very easy not to start something. The first design of this garden came at a time when I had little to no financial resources to invest in a garden. It would have been easy to have waited a few years until circumstances were more favourable to make investments in a garden, but by doing so, I would have missed a few years of getting to understand how different plants would behave in the garden.
These first few years benefited me immensely when it came time to redesign the garden. I had a better idea of where not to plant certain things, but mostly, I knew what I did not like. I had no place to sit and enjoy the garden. When it rained, I was walking through mud. I had no place to store anything, and I always seemed to be moving things out of the way to access areas of the garden.
Now, coming up eight years, this garden is a much more settled place to work and sit in. From the first design, the garden had a major redesign, followed by a much smaller design tweak. As I’m writing this in January 2026, I have made a start in removing a Goji berry that has never produced any fruit, but takes a rather large amount of maintenance time. A garden is never finished, but this small space has become an important part of my life, amongst other things, providing me with food, a place to sit and read.
Here I am sharing a collection of photos from this past year's growing season to help inspire others about what can be achieved with a little thought and planning.
The following photos were taken during the summer of 2025.
